Cleaning a Cast Iron Pan

Most cast iron pans come with a layer of seasoning already applied that protects the surface while adding flavor to the food. After cooking, you can best preserve the seasoning layer by putting coarse salt in the pan and using a wooden spatula to scrape food residue off. (If some remains, use a small amount of water to soften it and then remove it.) After cleaning the surface, wipe it with a piece of paper towel.

Here are some things to do to get your house ready for the grit and wet of winter.

1: Be sure you have good matts inside each door to the outside.

2. Good idea to have slippers for guests too, to keep down on the grit.

3. Put down carpet runners in hallways especially near the door.

4. Because of the dry heat and closed doors, dust tends to build up in winter. Be sure you have a clean furnace filter, and dust often.

One more for the white vinegar!

I look through a lot of blogs to learn about cleaning methods. Here is one blog that stands out from the rest for the simple reason that it really considers what you need to know to make the process work! A simple premise: white vinegar cleans cloudy glasses. But here are the loving details to round out the picture:

White vinegar works as a cleaning agent when you warm it up!
How do you warm it up? By putting the bottle (or a cup of it) in the sink with the drain stopped, filled with warm water,
Give it time (an hour)
Remove the softened deposits with a nylon sponge or mesh
How do the spots get there? Mineral deposits from air drying in the dish washer.
What to do? Hand wash glasses or get a mineral softener.
